Are you feeling like you need to escape the realities of life and run away to a foreign magical place? My trip to Iceland couldn’t have come at a better time, the pressures and emotions of generally doing the ‘adult life’ were weighing on me and I just wanted to find a place where beautiful things are everywhere, the native people believe in elves and fairy tales, and feeling insignificantly small is a welcome escape. Iceland was the perfect place to hide away for a few days.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
The incredibly vast and mostly untouched countryside is so different from anything I’ve ever seen. The perfect waterfalls and glistening glaciers are so far away from the London life (and even farther from my Australian life) that I could forget the world for four days and completely disassociate from any job worries, relationship problems or general uneasiness and immerse myself in a new country.

Walking To Gullfoss Waterfall
Iceland is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a little bit of magic on your next holiday. No, it doesn’t have anything to do with Harry Potter, and it has everything to do with the incredible vastness of the landscapes.

I could spend all day watching the amazing waterfalls (or ‘foss’ in Icelandic) although I may have frozen to death if I had.

Vatnsleysufoss Waterfall
And when the sun comes out between snow and rain showers, you can’t question that there’s a sprinkling of magic around.

Skógafoss Waterfall
And then a rainbow makes you certain that the Icelandic elves and fairies really do exist. As our guide told us ‘We respect the elves and they respect us’. After seeing several Icelandic waterfalls and landscapes I have to say I’m a believer.

The people of Iceland were also a breath of fresh air. The women are strong and independent, and even the men that we spoke to joked about their strength and being more ‘afraid’ of their wives than their friends. However, this was all said with a twinkle of love and appreciation for their partner, which was so adorable and refreshing to see. Being around independent and strong female guides was also exactly what I needed in my weekend reality getaway.

Solheimajokull Glacier
The Icelandic people are also extremely passionate about keeping their amazing landscapes as untouched as possible. Seeing people who are so proud of their country, and also proud to show it off to visitors makes you appreciate everything about the country and embrace the few days we had there to explore and escape.

If you’re looking for a new destination that will truly act as a magical escape from reality then Iceland is the place for you. I guarantee you will forget all of your worries and just stand in awe of the crazy sights that cover this amazing country!
Wow I’m so jealous – Iceland is at the top of my Bucket List! Love this post 🙂
