When I first looked up Sintra and the best places to go in Portugal, one distinct picture popped up on my Pinterest page. A dreamy castle with intricate steeples to rival the Disney logo.. I knew I had to go. Lo and behold I actually managed to get the ‘money shot’ of that exact picture I had seen:
And yes, it is just as beautiful in person as in picture. That castle is Quinta Da Regaleira also nicknamed ‘The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire’ after its maker. After all, what else is there to do when you’re a millionaire than build a gorgeous castle and ‘adult maze’ type gardens on a mountain in Portugal?
As we were driving up to the palace, our Portuguese driver tried to describe it and the grounds to us. “This one, it’s spiritual, do not go if you are not feeling open” she began, “It’s like a play ground for adults, mazes and ups and downs and you find your own path”. Ok then, not sure what we were to expect, but even more excited nonetheless.
The only way I can describe it, is as a mystical, magical forest maze. Everywhere you walk there is a beautiful piece of greenery or a cave to walk into or a well to fall down.
You turn the corner and there’s an amazing view.
Or a mysterious black cat.
Or a secret cave only accessible by water…
..in which you walked under a water fall…
…and ended up inside a well.
It really is a very magical place, and if you’re anything like me and love discovering new things at every corner, you won’t miss the beautiful crazy gardens of Quinta Da Regaleira. Definitely a must see on your next trip to Sintra, Portugal.
